Total Triage FAQs

Booking an Appointment with a GP or Nurse Practitioner

What has changed?

For the last six months, all requests for an appointment with a GP or Nurse Practitioner have been passed on to a doctor for prioritisation. This system is called "Total Triage" and is used increasingly by practices across the UK. Those who are unable to do an online consultation can 'phone in the usual way, and the receptionist can assist or complete an online submission on the patient's behalf. Other appointments continue to be made in the normal way (Nurse appointments, blood tests, First-Contact-Physiotherapist, Pharmacist, Mental Health Practitioner, Social Prescriber, Health-care Assistants).

Why did the practice make this change?

We were finding that those with internet access were sometimes getting attention more quickly than those without, and the new contract highlighted the need for a "level playing field" so that priority was based purely on clinical need. We strongly support this principle. Secondly, patients were having a long wait for the 'phone to be answered, and then a long wait for an appointment.

How do I seek help form a GP or Nurse Practitioner if I do not have access to the internet?

You can call in the normal way and a receptionist will complete the online form on your behalf.

What improvements have followed since these changes?

Patients have their calls answered much more quickly, and patients wait much less time for appointments.

If I want to try using online services, how can I get help?

Reception can talk you through the process, and can provide a step-by-step guide if required.
